What is the one Guaranteed Secret for Success for Business Opportunities?
Chris Garret, at www.performancing.com talks about The One Guaranteed Instant Cast Iron Indisputable Success Factor, which is:
"If only I knew what that guy knows I would be an adsense millionaire.""With this ebook I will learn the secrets of SEO and will get to the first result of Google."
"After this conference call my blog will be launched into the a-list."
Sounds ridiculous doesn't it but people are suckered into this thinking every day. If you asked them to explain it logically they would probably admit it's not guaranteed as such but this one piece of advise is all they need. 10 minutes with Matt Cutts and they will be a super-SEO".
Chris is correct to say that it is ridiculous, but nonetheless is we are suckered everyday into this thinking. (I refrain from making the obvious remark about the headline to this post.)
How is it possible for us to be both suckers for the ridiculous on an everyday basis but also be able to lead normal economic lives as pretty decent maximizers? Well one explanation, familiar to logicians, is that we often mix up necessary conditions with sufficient conditions: A implies B is confused with B implies A.
Many techniques that would earn money would not do so if they were not secret. But that doesn't make secrets valuable, only valuable information secret.
Also far more money is earned by people who: a) perform their skills in front of us, and b) are simply more talented or lucky than we are.
Anyone telling you a secret that somebody else doesn't want you to know is setting you up for some misdirection. Handle with care. Or you will live to regret it.
