Palin Vetted for VP?

As a Canadian, I don't have much of a horse in the upcoming US Presidential Race, or what I call "Crown the King" race.
Having lived in the US for several years, I have a great deal of respect for the underlying democratic institutions.
But, I wonder how being Head of the Republic got downsized into decision between sound bites, instead of intelligent conversation.
I do like what Robert Reich had to say about due diligence and the Palin VP choice.
"Having been through the process of "vetting" prospective cabinet members, I can tell you it's time-consuming, detailed, and thorough.
I'd like to think the vetting of a vice presidential nominee would be more so - especially one whose odds of becoming president, should she be elected, are somewhat higher than that of the normal vice president."
This ought to be worrisome for any Republican. Do you think that your candiate can accurately predict who can work with him after so little due diligence? Or does he just not care, because ain't nobody going to work with him as President?
