O.C. suit accuses fundraiser Hsu of $23-million fraud - Los Angeles Times
"An Orange County investment company filed a lawsuit against disgraced fundraiser Norman Hsu on Friday, saying that he defrauded investors out of at least $23 million and dictated that they make contributions to Democratic candidates as a condition of doing business with him.According to the suit, Hsu persuaded the company's operator that he was legitimate partly by taking him to Democratic Party events, where, the suit alleges, Hsu was thanked and praised by New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and California Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown, among others.
At Hsu's direction, the lawsuit says, the investors poured tens of thousands of dollars into Democratic coffers, delivering $30,000 worth of checks payable to Clinton's campaign on a single day."

In stark contrast, Canada's IMET has secured just two convictions against a single person: Michael Lee Mitten, a career fraudster with more than 105 criminal convictions. And while high-profile executive defendants like Conrad Black, Bernard Ebbers and Dennis Kozlowski face decades in prison for their crimes, Mitton could be back on the street as early as next year after serving a mere one-sixth of his six-year sentence."

The indictment outlines a scheme in which Shaw and De Lavalette solicited investments from victims – some of whom were clients of Shaw’s law practice – by falsely stating that the money would be used to trade European bank instruments. The defendants allegedly told victims that their money would be held as collateral, meaning that the investment was completely safe. Shaw told victims that he had completed high-yield investments in the past and had many satisfied clients. Shaw also claimed that he traded AA-rated securities and bonds. The victims were told that their money would be refunded within 30 days of a request.
