New Cheque Fraud Angle

There is a new angle to the advance fee scam as WAVY TV 10 reports Scam Alert: Crooks target area wedding vendors

"Crooks are targeting wedding vendors in the area.

Scammers are telling wedding planners, florists, and cake makers that they have a lot of money to spend on an elaborate wedding.

They say they're sending a large check for more than the total, to cover any extra costs. Sounds great. But, the catch is - they need the vendor to immediately cut a check for some odd expense."

Of course the large cheque will turn out to be no good, leaving the wedding vendor on the hook for it and the smaller cheque.

This is a difficult con to pull off successfully because the number of wedding vendors who have to take an odd deal is small.

As one vendor said:

"If it doesn't sound right, you just don't want to do that."
